Project Vardan

Welcome to Sustainable Livelihood Initiative India (SLII) Pvt. Ltd.

A low cost multi stage water purification system powered by dye sensitized solar cells which are made from e-waste. ‘Vardan’ is world’s most affordable (in terms of per liter filtration costs) and sustainable water purifier made for domestic uses.

'Vardan' - Affordable and Sustainable - 'Complete' Water Purifier

Purifies water at under ₹ 8 paisa per litre ($ 0.005 per US gallon)

Why Vardan?

According to Water Aid, 1 billion Indians are living in water scarce areas. Niti Aayog reports that 75% of Indian households do not have piped drinking water supply on premise and of the remaining 25%, 70% receive contaminated water. The non-piped sources of water like wells, ponds and rivers are full of life-threatening contamination. As per Government data, 7 Indians are killed and 36,000 Indians suffer from water borne diseases every day. People are well aware of the dangers of contaminated water, but unfortunately, they do not have any viable alternatives. The go-to method of filtering water in India is Reverse Osmosis (RO), but it is expensive and discards at least 3 litres of water for every litre purified, whereas boiling water requires fuel which has a massive carbon footprint making it unsustainable for our climate. Impure water is inducing inequalities and poverty, thereby pushing human development back. It is this question of survival that we are passionate about solving. Project

Vardan Water Purifier seeks to counter all these issues.

Our technology upgrades the conventional bio-sand filters to make them more resilient and user friendly. Made for a massive purification volume of 150,000 litres of water, when used at the rate of 40 litres per day, the shelf life of Vardan Water Purifier is 10 years! The end product is very affordable, wastes no water, requires no external energy or pumps and works for all water sources emitting zero carbon emissions. Two core technologies function simultaneously - first, an inexpensive way of synthesising graphene used for removing physical impurities and second, the conversion of electronic waste to solar cells that powers UVc Germicidal light inside the system.

Input water can enter the system in either automatic (via piped line) or manual (pour by hand) mode. Water is purified within 10 seconds via gravity. With no regular investment required and a zero-learning curve, this solution provides people with a practical option to purify water, thereby saving many lives.

Water purifiers have a direct impact on social and economic development. An effective water purification system would not only improve health conditions within local communities but would also reduce the time and energy expenditures necessary for water collection. Time and money that was once spent purifying water could now be allocated towards more productive activities, such as working, education, food production, and caring for children, boosting the income, nutrition, and health of the household.

Key features of Vardan

No Moving Parts

There are no complex membranes or mechanical parts used in Vardan. This brings down the maintenance costs drastically to almost zero.

No Electricity Required

The Ultraviolet (UV) Germicidal light used in Vardan is powered by PV Solar Cells made from e-waste. Hence no external energy is required.

Extremely Cheap

Estimate costs of the final product range between INR 5500 - INR 11000 depending upon the volume of water required to be filtered daily.

No Wastage of Water

A RO filter wastes at least a litre of water as reject for every litre of water purified. Vardan wastes nothing.

Long Shelf Life

The purification system will last at least 10 years at negligible maintenance (changing UV light and Activated Carbon chamber).

Smart Use Of Nanotechnology

We are using highly adsorptive filter media: Graphene! It is not only a great filtration media but also has high antibacterial properties.

Vardan is currently out of stock and will be available again soon

A Dye Sensitized Solar Cell made from Blueberries and discarded cellphones.

The technology that powers the Ultraviolet (UV) Germicidal light used in Vardan water purification systems is termed as Dye Sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC). These are third generation photovoltaic cells that convert any visible light into electrical energy.

DSSC are made out of electronic waste. A naturally available organic dye (such as Blueberry as seen in the image) and a simple chemical (like Iodide) is sandwiched between two similarly sized mobile screens and baked in simple microwave.

The Result – A Fully Functional PV Solar Cell at 10% the cost of a conventional solar cell.
